Ebook About Collars and Cuffs: Book OneSince the death of his submissive lover two years ago, Leo hasn’t been living—merely existing. He focuses on making Collars & Cuffs, a BDSM club in Manchester’s gay village, successful. That changes the night he and his business partner have their weekly meeting at Severinos. Leo can’t keep his eyes off the new server. The shy man seems determined to avoid Leo’s gaze, but that’s like a red rag to a bull. Leo loves a challenge.Alex Daniels works at Severinos to scrape together the money to move out on his own. He struggles with coming out, but he’s drawn to Leo, the gorgeous guy with the icy-blue eyes who’s been eating in his area nearly every night.Leo won’t let Alex’s hesitance get in the way. He even keeps him away from the club so as not to scare him. And as for telling Alex that Leo is a Dom? Not a good idea. One date becomes two, but date two leads to Leo’s bedroom… and Alex discovers things about himself he never realized—and never wanted anyone to see. LR Cafe's 2013 Best BDSM/Kink Book Runner UpBook An Unlocked Heart (Collars and Cuffs Book 1) Review :
If you like hot, HOT gay BDSM sex without the distraction of a plot, then this book is for you! For me, this book started off great. Thomas (aka Sir or Master) has been grieving the death of his previous love/sub Gabe for two years. He spots in a restaurant a young waiter named Alex (aka boy), a recent college grad working as a waiter. From his initial meeting with Alex, Thomas can tell that Alex would be a natural submissive, but also realizes that Alex has very little knowledge of the BDSM world. So instead, he pursues Alex as a lover. If the book has only continued in this vein (ok, with a little BDSM thrown in). The romance is actually very sweet and well written. But instead it goes full throttle toward the kink, verging on pornographic, sex scenes that do little to advance the romance. I also felt uncomfortable with how submissive Alex is, although Thomas remains very respectful of him.And lastly, a pet peeve: why has Alex never attempted to get a job that he was trained for in college? I get that the market might have been tight, and Alex would have had to temporarily work as a waiter. Yet throughout the time period of this book (over 6 months), Alex never makes one effort to improve his circumstances. And, despite living in a truly horrific home (which I suspect he paid little or no rent), Alex is unable to save enough money for his own place! Alex is just too weak of a character for me. This book was a nice, light read focusing far more on romance than BDSM. Not a bad thing in itself, but not quite what I was looking for. When a series is set in a BDSM club, I expected to see more BDSM. There were elements of D/s, and they were fairly well done, but this felt more like a vanilla relationship than a master/sub relationship. The sex scenes were definitely hot, and I felt an emotional connection between the two main characters, but found the story to be incredibly repetitive and fairly uninspired. The author clearly draws much inspiration from other erotica authors, even going so far as to mention them several times. She definitely borrows quite a few themes and elements from Chris Owen especially, which isn't necessarily bad, but I felt as if the author got all of her education on BDSM from reading erotica rather than doing any original research on her own. It's one things for readers, such as myself, knowing of this lifestyle purely through fictional accounts, but I expect more from an author. The story was good, but it didn't feel original. I've read very similar stories plenty of other times and I can't find anything in this book that's really original or different from other stuff I've read. The author calling out other erotica authors was kind of strange to me. Alex at one point even specifically states that he wants to try public exhibitionism solely because he read about it in Owens' "Domination" series. Even the characters can't manage to have original ideas. And the constant repetition of phrases just got incredibly annoying. Everyone's a "happy bunny", Alex does a lot of "mewling", Leo ends almost every single sentence of dialogue with "boy". Not to mention such cringeworthy words as "throbbing", "turgid", "tumescent" and "mound of flesh" to describe a certain male anatomical part. And sooo many exclamation points.Alex was also too feminine for my tastes. He read like a giddy teenage girl on several occasions, especially in the handful of journal entries he writes. Lots of "OMG" and "LOL" moments. All the journal entries wound up doing was to "tell" rather than "show". I would much rather have experienced Alex and Leo's first spanking scene instead of having Alex just write a couple sentences about it in his journal. Alex isn't masculine in the least, and I understand not all male characters have to be, but I'm interested in reading about men being men, feminine characters just don't interest me.Overall, it was a decent read, and hot at times, but it didn't hold my interest enough to continue on with the series.
