Wow. I can see how this one must have been hard for Benjamin to write. The ending was designed to pull on the heart-strings just a bit, although honestly with the way it was foreshadowed it wasn't exactly a surprise to me.And that's all I'll say about the main climax as it would be spoilerific to try to say anything more.But that aside, this series displays Benjamin's writing when he is at his best. The characters get to grow and develop. Something that few authors seem capable of. The heroes are heroic and smart, not just stumbling between set pieces. There is humor that isn't forced. Drama that doesn't come from angst (Joy is the least angsty character I've run into in years which makes her a joy to read about.) And overall just a great narrative that doesn't leave you feeling cheated at the end.Its hard to say more positive things about any book. This series has been one I've loved from the start, and Benjamin managed to pull off the story perfectly. It's one of the few I've read where the climax just felt worthy of 5 stars. Since the gods of Medrano's D&D inspired world created humanoidApis from giant bees in book one, api Joy has been questing withher adventurer friends (whom she considers her hive) looking tolevel-up enough to become a Queen and cast aside the three yearWorker lifespan (of which she is in the final months). Along theway, she has made friends with other hives and has several timesthwarted the plans of a clever demon who is working to rise as thenext Dark Lord despite the times not being quite ripe for that.Now the demon is back, and he has what may be unbeatable backing.Even with what forces the Kingdoms of Light can quickly bring to bear, thecrisis may once again fall on Joy and her companions, and this time theremay be drastic consequences."Joy" was not named by her friends randomly, and she remains just thatto read: A character so overflowing with energy and positivity that shepractically hops off the page. This book brings the first arc of herstory to a close, but thanks to her (totally characteristic) actions atthe climax and during the denouement, she will be back, and I will continueto follow her adventures.
