I’m sure that had nothing to do with the occasional tears in my eyes.The town of Mad Creek in the California mountains is a quiet place, and it has its secrets. Chief among them is a substantial community of “quickened,” or dog shifters. Among them is Sherriff Lance Beaufort, who, being a border collie, is focused entirely on his job, which is protecting the people of Mad Creek – his pack. When a shifty-eyed young stranger comes to town, smelling of weed and unwilling to talk to Sherriff Beaufort, Lance decides to do a little undercover work – as a dog.Tim Weston, on the other hand, is just trying to start over, far away from the abuse and exploitation that seems to have haunted him all of his 23 years. I've read shape shifting stories before, but none where the shape shifting is a secondary aspect. Usually it is not about domesticated animals, either, but it worked. It was interesting to get inside Lance's mind and hearing him juggle his inner dog with his human life. The romance was so-and-so, but I am intrigued to read more of the books in the series as I was more interested in the town/shape shifting than the couple itself.
